Marchant Cast Pro-Life Vote in Opposition to Stem Cell and Cloning

Representative Kenny Marchant (R-TX) released the following statement today, after opposing H.R. 3, a measure that would allow federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

"As a grandfather and pro-life advocate, I could not in good conscious support a measure that condones the cloning and destruction of human embryonic stem cells. H.R. 3 would allow for government sanctioned ending of an embryonic life. Whatever the reasoning, be it personal or religious, millions of Americans oppose cloning and human embryo destruction. This measure authorizes taxpayer dollars to do both. The unintended consequences of this bill, would lead us down the road of federally funded embryonic stem cell research, and potentially end on a freeway of incentive based cloning.

"During the floor remarks by members leading up to the vote, it became clear that there are passionate people on both sides of this debate. Given the level of conviction surrounding this issue, it is unfortunate that House Democrats prevented this bill from going through the proper legislative channels, being further debated in committee, and open to amendments."
